What is the Internet?

How Does the Internet Work?

At its core, the internet functions based on a client-server model. When you access a website or send an email, your device acts as a client, and it communicates with a server that hosts t he requested content. This communication is made possible by several key technologies.

IP Address (Internet Protocol)

Every device connected to the internet is assigned a unique identifier called an IP address. An IP address consists of a series of numbers separated by periods (e.g., 192.168.0.1). It serv es as the device’s digital address, allowing data to be sent and received across the network.

DNS (Domain Name System)

While IP addresses are essential for network communication, humans find it easier to remember domain names (e.g., www.example.com) rather than IP addresses. This is where the Domain Name S ystem (DNS) comes into play. DNS acts as a directory that translates domain names into their corresponding IP addresses.

When you enter a domain name in your web browser, your device contacts a DNS server to obtain the IP address associated with that domain. Once the IP address is obtained, your device can e stablish a connection with the server hosting the requested content.
